Travelling solo doesn’t mean travelling alone
With the increase in baby boomers travelling alone, travel companies now offer tours for single seniors without any hidden extra costs.
Solo travelling can be exciting and rewarding and is safe for seniors with tours that are hosted from the minute you arrive at your first destination. However, single travellers are often surprised by the ‘single supplement’ they may be required to pay.
The single supplement is charged because only one person is using a room or cabin and advertised prices are generally calculated per person under the assumption that two or more people will be sharing. Most hotel rooms and cabins are priced as doubles or family rooms and don’t reduce their rates when a single person books the room.
Although travelling alone is sometimes a necessity rather than a luxury, hoteliers and cruise agents may argue that solo travellers have an advantage because they have a room all to themselves and the room or cabin still needs to be prepared and cleaned regardless of how many are using the room.
Many tours do not have a single supplement if you book on a ‘willing to share basis’. If someone of the same sex also books on a willing to share basis you will be matched up, but if no one books on this basis then you get single accommodation at the twin share pricing.
This is a terrific option for single senior travellers who don’t want to pay single supplements but are still keen to travel.
