Elizabeth Moncrieff-Philp, Senior Clinical Social Worker at SA Health, said there are three important steps you can take if you’re worried about a friend or family member.
Question: Make the first move and ask them whether they’re okay.
Persuade: Encourage them to seek help.
Refer: Offer practical assistance by referring them to a professional, whether that’s their general practitioner or a 24-hour helpline like Lifeline or beyondblue.
Elizabeth said mental wellness was characterised by resilience, forming positive relationships, taking enjoyment in activities, and maintaining healthy habits.
It’s important to keep an eye out for your friends and loved ones, especially when you they are going through something difficult, like a loss or significant lifestyle change.
If you notice they are beginning to withdraw from social activities or that their demeanour changes, speak up.
“By asking a question and following up with appropriate support, we can save lives,” Elizabeth said.
