Chiquita Walsh and Anne Jack, co-managers at Albury’s Murray Gardens Retirement Village and cousins, have been shortlisted for the prestigious NSW Village Manager of the Year award.
Presented by the Retirement Living Council, the award recognises village managers who go above and beyond for their residents.
“We’re just absolutely delighted that we’ve been nominated as Village Manager of the Year,” said Anne.
“It’s an absolute surprise and we’re very happy.”
Residents and colleagues wholeheartedly supported Chiquita and Anne’s nomination, citing the genuine warmth, enthusiasm and expertise the duo displays every day.
“Murray Gardens has evolved into a social, hospitable, caring and supportive environment due to Chiq and Anne’s innate ability to anticipate the needs of residents and staff,” said colleagues Michelle Banbrook and Nicole Cropley in their endorsement.
Since taking on the joint role at Murray Gardens in September 2012, Chiquita and Anne have introduced a range of innovative initiatives, including partnerships with Delta Society and the Rotary Club and the introduction of a concierge to provide residents with daily assistance.
Most recently, they have partnered with a local art gallery to turn part of the community centre into an exhibition space, highlighting the residents’ love of art and welcoming the local community into the village.
Honest communication and a shared focus on improving the lives of residents are at the foundation of their management style, and the cousins believe their strong underlying bond is what makes the partnership work so well.
“We grew up together so we know each other really well, and it’s such an honour to be able to share this job with someone I love,” said Chiquita.
“We’ve been privileged to be part of the patchwork of our residents’ lives here at Murray Gardens and you can’t put a price on that – that’s why we love what we do,” added Anne.
The winner of the Village Manager of the Year award will be announced at the NSW Retirement Forum on Tuesday 12 September.
