A healthier way to eat at Lincoln Grove

Enjoying a nutritious diet is vital for good health in retirement - a fact the team at Lincoln Grove in Port Lincoln are keenly aware of.

A July 2017 Nutrition & Dietetics report suggested that aged care residents in Australia are fed on just $6.08 per day, while resident spending on nutritional supplements and meal replacements had increased by 128 per cent.

For care apartment residents at Lincoln Grove, things are done differently.

Part of the care apartment service includes fresh, quality meals every day, providing residents with a nutritious, varied diet.

Village manager Dianne Ottery said the team at Lincoln Grove aims to give residents access to food that is both health-promoting and enjoyable.

“We have steamed veggies, fruit salad or fruit plates, fish at least once a week, vegetarian options daily, and we mix up the proteins throughout the week,” she said.

“In the kitchen we have a list of residents’ allergies, their likes and dislikes, and a note of whether they prefer fresh fruit in place of desserts.

“The daily menu is put on the board every day, and if there’s something a resident doesn’t like we make them something else.”

A special weekly menu on Wednesdays allows residents an opportunity to enjoy a sit-down, restaurant-style dinner in the community centre.

“We’ve had barramundi with chips and salad, chicken cordon bleu, spicy pulled pork, and t-bone steak,” Dianne said.

“We get a lot of positive feedback!”
