For resident Barb Baird, it’s not only the friendly and supportive environment that makes her feel like she belongs at Glengowrie Retirement Village, but an unexpected family connection going back years.
For resident Barb Baird, it’s not only the friendly and supportive environment that makes her feel like she belongs at Glengowrie Retirement Village, but an unexpected family connection going back years.
Before moving to Glengowrie five years ago, Barb spent 15 years as a volunteer at the Mary Potter Hospice in Adelaide.
“When I first visited Glengowrie, Debbie [Dean, Village Manager] was familiar and then I remembered I’d worked with her mum at the hospice,” Barb said.
“I felt I could trust Debbie, so I didn’t bother to look at any other retirement villages after that.”
Debbie has been a familiar face at Glengowrie since joining the team in 2010, and focuses on making sure residents’ everyday lives are relaxed and stress-free.
“Our residents really enjoy the social benefits and freedom village life provides,” Debbie said.
“It’s all about living in a friendly and supportive environment, and, at Glengowrie, we are one big family.”
Barb, who leads an active life in retirement, said she likes living with like-minded people and not having to worry about home maintenance.
“When I moved in five years ago, I was determined to attend as many village activities as possible,” Barb said.
“I like to be involved, and it’s a good excuse for not doing any housework.”
