Residents and staff at Bartonvale Gardens Retirement Village raised an impressive $838 for Autism SA at a village event this week.
Over 50 residents and staff members attended the ‘soup and nibbles’ fundraiser and were treated to village chef Trevor Doe’s bacon and vegetable, pumpkin, and potato and leek soups.
The combination of residents’ generosity and delicious fare made the event such a success, said Village Manager, Robyn Bennett.
“There was a lovely atmosphere in the community centre and Trevor’s soups were amazing,” she said.
“Thank you to everyone who donated.”
Autism SA was founded in 1964 and advocates for greater acceptance and understanding of autism in the broader community.
Autism is defined as a persistent development disorder evident from early childhood.
Symptoms can range on a spectrum from mild to severe and include difficulty in social interaction, restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour and impaired communication skills.
In 2015 it was estimated that 164,000 Australians had autism, representing about 1 in 150 people.
Around a quarter of those accessed disability support services under the National Disability Agreement.
