Residents of Cleveland Manor in Brisbane have donated Woolworths ‘Earn & Learn’ stickers collected from almost $8000 worth of grocery shopping to the remote Ubobo State School.
Located in the Boyne Valley south of Gladstone, the school’s nearest Woolworths is a two-hour round trip away, so its 12 students wrote to Cleveland Manor asking for help collecting stickers to be traded for school equipment.
Village Manager Wendy Rogers said Cleveland Manor’s community-minded residents were quick to respond to help their young friends.
“It’s the second year we’ve collected for the school and we had a great response,” Wendy said.
“All the residents really got on board, and we collected and sent off more than 13 sheets of stickers, tallying up to 790 stickers in total.”
Cleveland Manor resident Barbara Woolven helped coordinate the collection and posting of the stickers.
“I think it’s great to do something for the kids in the country who probably don’t get much help,” she said.
Over 15,000 schools and early learning centres took part in Earn & Learn this year, and participating schools can trade their stickers for science, maths, English, sports or arts equipment.
“Because everyone jumped on board we got quite a few stickers, and we hope the students can get good use out of them,” Barbara said.
