Residents of Wellington Manor raised $2150 for outreach charity Rosies – Friends on the Street by holding a soup kitchen-style lunch and raffle last week.
Around 80 residents attended the event in the village community centre, with the range of soups on offer inspired by the fare served to the people Rosies – Friends on the Street aims to help.
Rosies – Friends on the Street was founded in 1975 in Victoria and began its Brisbane operation in 1989.
The charity aims to connect with those in need, including homeless, marginalised and socially isolated members of the community.
Village Manager Wendy Rogers said the fundraising feat was typical of the charitable residents at Wellington Manor.
“As always, residents worked together to raise a fantastic sum to donate to Rosies,” Wendy said.
Resident Des Williams helped coordinate the event.
“I do charity work for Rosies, and the committee approached me and suggested having a soup kitchen with bread rolls and desserts to raise funds,” he said.
“Rosies are delighted with the response and I think residents are happy to have them as their preferred charity.”
Rosies – Friends on the Street runs street outreaches on the corner of Charlotte and Tingal Streets, Wynnum every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from 7pm to 9pm.
