Residents of Murray Gardens raised their biggest amount yet for the Albury-Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre at their annual Christmas market on the weekend.
The event attracted several hundred people and raised $4,200, beating the $2,300 total achieved at the village’s gala day in June.
Stallholders from the village and wider community sold a range of festive items, a band from the Murray Conservatorium provided entertainment, and a raffle and sausage sizzle proved popular.
Co-Village Manager Chiquita Walsh said residents had worked together for months to ensure the event was a success.
“The craft group contributed everything from paintings, Christmas hampers and knitted Santas to the raffle,” she said.
“The village looked wonderful and so many people enjoyed the market.”
Resident Marion Underhill helped organise the event.
“Even though it was raining, we had so many people coming and going that there was a traffic jam at one stage,” she said.
“The brass band was so good we gave them three cheers at the end!”
Founded in 2009, the Albury-Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre was the first cross-border public health service in Australia, and supports a catchment population of 250,000.
All of the money raised will go towards new equipment for the centre.
“People at Murray Gardens and the wider area have been really generous,” Marion said.
“It’s a wonderful community.”
