A resident of Noyea Riverside has been selected to be a Commonwealth Games batonbearer in recognition of his work with a Brisbane youth development program.
Ep Lammers, 82, was nominated for the prestigious role for his achievements with Braking the Cycle in Logan, which aims to provide young people with increased employment opportunities and social connection.
Ep said he was “overjoyed and proud as punch” to be made an official batonbearer for the Games.
“I’ve been involved with Braking the Cycle for six years, helping young people to overcome the barriers to attaining a driving licence,” he said.
“I feel deeply honoured to have been nominated.”
Noyea Riverside Village Manager Deborah Eivers said Ep was a deserving choice as a batonbearer.
“Ep is a lovely, generous man, and we will all be cheering for him when he carries the baton,” she said.
Running from 4th-15th April, the 2018 Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast will feature over ,600 athletes from 70 nations competing in 18 sports and seven para-sports, with a television audience of 1.5 billion expected to tune in.
Participants in the 100-day Australian leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay were chosen as being representative of the spirit of the Games.
Ep, a resident of Noyea since 2013, said he is keen to attend the Games once his official duties are complete.
“I’ll be carrying the baton on April Fool’s Day in Beenleigh, escorted by two police officers,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to going to the swimming events.”
