Generations come together at Harwin

Harwin Retirement Village was a hive of activity this week when students from Thomas More College visited as part of a community service initiative.

Around 20 year 8 students cleaned, swept, weeded, pruned, and assisted with food preparation and service, before sharing a morning tea and playing board games, cards and eight-ball, and taking knitting lessons with their new friends.

Teacher Louise Eldridge said the aim of the visit was to allow the students to help people within the local community.

“The students loved the opportunity to meet new people and experience things they have never done before,” she said.

“Most importantly, the students were able to connect with the residents and establish relationships that we hope to foster and continue.”

Principal Andrew Balkwill said building connections was vital for students.

“We want our students to thrive in today’s world, hence the importance of connecting with people in the wider community,” he said.

Harwin’s Promotions and Events Coordinator, Anna Zinenko, said everyone at the village thoroughly enjoyed the students’ visit.

“Residents had a wonderful time engaging with the younger generation,” she said.

“It was a great deal of fun – thank you to them all.”

Staying connected to others is vital to feeling happy and secure, and social connection can be a protective factor against anxiety and depression – especially as we age, says beyondblue.
