Margaret Vint was born to paint.

From childhood scribbling to completing hundreds of paintings and winning several awards at Bundaberg Arts Festival, the Carlyle Gardens resident’s artistic talents have come a long way.

“I loved drawing dresses on pictures of ladies in magazines and catalogues as a child,” she said.

“Most print media then was in black and white so I could colour them in.”

In her teenage years, she worked for a photography studio as a messenger, before becoming an expert in colouring black and white photographs by hand.

She also trained other copyists for what she jokingly describes as the “magnificent salary” of four pounds a week.

Her next job involved visiting art galleries to copy well-known works and shipping them to be sold on the North American market.

After marrying and starting a family she continued to paint at home, eventually joining a local art group and switching from mainly oils to mainly watercolours.

Margaret continues to enjoy working on her art, having spent 23 years at Carlyle Gardens.

“I love where I am,” she said.

“I’ve got a beautiful home with a beautiful outlook at the back – I have the best spot in the village!”
