Torrens Grove’s time for giving

The spirit of Christmas is in plentiful supply at Torrens Grove, where residents have been busy collecting items to help the homeless.

Under a Christmas tree labelled the ‘Magic of Community’, a growing number of tinned and dried food items, toiletries and clothing, is gathering.

The items will be donated to the Hutt St Centre in the Adelaide CBD.

Resident Coral Pearce has been coordinating the collection, inviting residents, families and friends to contribute items.

“A notice went out to all the residents and we got a marvellous response,” she said.

“We started the food run last year, as we were already knitting items for the homeless.

“We knit squares and there’s another lady who sews them all up, as well as gloves, beanies and scarves.”

Village Manager Kaye Coats said the collection is symbolic of the generosity of residents at the Kilkenny community.

“It’s been an amazing team effort, especially by the knitting ladies,” she said.

Around 200 homeless people visit the Hutt St Centre every day.

The CBD facility serves around 50,000 meals per year, and offers social work and support services, as well as shower and laundry facilities.

“It’s great to know we can help people,” Coral said.
