Residents of Drayton Villas raised over $3000 for the Toowoomba Hospice and Olive McMahon Lodge at their annual fundraiser.
A morning tea and bring-and-buy sale drew around 110 people to the village’s community centre to raise money for the two local charities.
Village Manager Scott Burton said the success of the day was down to a number of residents donating their time, skills, and items to sell or give away as prizes.
“Huge credit must go to our fantastic volunteers and all the extremely generous residents,” Scott said.
Drayton resident and event organiser Alvia Rogers said organising the event was a combined effort by a number of people.
“We sold handicrafts, jams, pickles, knitted and crocheted items, and much more – all made by residents,” Alvia said.
“We also ran a raffle and a lucky door, all with donated prizes – we’ve got some very, very generous people here at Drayton.”
The Toowoomba Hospice has been providing respite and palliative care since 2003, while Olive McMahon Lodge, operated by the Cancer Council, provides accommodation for those undergoing outpatient cancer treatment.
“Both the lodge and the hospice are marvellous places, and we raise money about once a year for them,” Alvia said.
While charity fundraising is a regular event on the Drayton Villas calendar, Alvia said she is always surprised by people’s generosity.
“We were absolutely elated and overwhelmed by the amount raised,” she said.
“We are all feeling very happy and grateful.”
