Celebrating a century

New centenarian, Richard Roworth, had 100 reasons to smile when he celebrated his milestone birthday at Bartonvale Gardens Retirement Village on Saturday 14 January.

Village Manager Kylie Curtis said Bartonvale Lodge hosted the party for Richard’s friends and family including his two daughters, grandchildren, great granddaughter, nieces and nephews.
“It was a fabulous day with everyone enjoying the birthday festivities and reminiscing,” Kylie said.
“We all took a walk down memory lane, celebrated Richard’s achievements and learned his secrets to a long life.”
Richard served with the British forces during World War II, before immigrating to Australia and settling in Adelaide where he met and married Eileen Keegan.
In 1954 Richard worked as a pay clerk, for General Motors Holden at the Woodville and Elizabeth plants, until his retirement in 1982.
Richard said his secret to longevity is integrity, hard work and having a purpose.
“Always leave a place so that you can return,” Richard said.
Richard’s daughter, Vicki Smith, said the atmosphere in the Lodge community centre was amazing.
“It was a wonderful day and the staff joined in the fun. They are so compassionate and you can see that they really care about the residents,” Vicki said.
To officially mark the occasion, Richard received congratulatory messages from Queen Elizabeth, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and Federal Member for Adelaide Kate Ellis.
