Carlyle Gardens Retirement Village in Bargara raised $5000 for drought relief at a garage sale on Saturday 8th September.
Around 600 people attended the sale and sausage sizzle in the village’s community centre, contributing to the bumper total raised.
The money will go to rural fundraising charity Buy a Bale, to help support Queensland farming communities with fodder and essential items in areas affected by severe drought.
As of 4th September 2018, the Queensland Government had declared 57.4% of the land area of the state drought-affected.
Village Manager Michael Owens said everyone at the village was delighted with the success of the event.
“To have raised so much is a fantastic achievement by all the residents,” he said.
“Many have lived and worked on the land, so this really means a lot.”
Residents of several RetireAustralia villages have raised impressive amounts for drought relief in the past weeks.
Newling Gardens Retirement Village in Armidale raised over $12,000 – a figure matched dollar-for-dollar by Rotary International, while a number of South Australian villages joined forces to raise over $2000.
Tarragal Glen on the Central Coast also collected over 40 boxes and 50 large shopping bags of goods to be donated to farming communities in New South Wales.
Carlyle Gardens residents are well-known in the area for their charitable spirit, having recently raised $645 for local charity, Angels Community Group.
