For Torrens Grove residents Michael and Dianne Henley, being part of a close-knit community is one of the best parts of retirement village life.
The independent living residents moved to the Kilkenny community nine years ago on the basis of a recommendation from a family member living at the village.
“You’re your own individual community, and you can do what you want to do and participate as much in the village activities as you want to,” Michael said.
“If you don’t, that’s also okay.
“There’s always a friend or neighbour close at hand, because we’re in a gated community.”
Torrens Grove offers independent living units and care apartments and a wide range of social activities, events and interest groups, including Tai chi, indoor bowls and movies, among others.
“We have happy hour three nights a week, and I’ll go to at least two of those,” Michael said.
“I do the calling for the bingo and every month we have a barbecue.
“The majority of people know everybody else and get to know everyone within a short space of time.”
Living without the burden of gardening or home maintenance has been a huge weight off the shoulders for the couple.
“If you need anything fixed, it’ll be taken care of straight away,” Dianne said.
“Everything is done for you, so your leisure time is increased.”
Michael’s advice for anyone considering making the transition to a retirement community is simple.
“Come along to the village, talk to someone and work out how it suits your situation and so forth.”
