Bartonvale Lodge residents Deane and Roberta Henderson are celebrating the major milestone of 60 years of marriage this month.
Deane and Bobby in 1958 and today
The couple will celebrate their diamond anniversary with a family dinner, with relatives coming from as far as Brisbane for the occasion.
Deane and Roberta (Bobby) (nee Laslett) were married at the Catholic church in Mount Gambier on 15th February 1958, having met while they were both employed at agribusiness company Elder Smith & Co.
“We hit it off pretty well at work, and we would go for a swim together at Port MacDonnell,” Deane said.
Deane spent the majority of his career in real estate, while Bobby worked full-time as a mother and housewife.
The couple had five children, although one tragically died at just two weeks.
Deane said the key to a long and successful marriage is simple.
“I think we have similar interests and we just melded together,” he said.
“It’s worked out well!”
Bartonvale Lodge‘s Kylie Curtis said it has been a pleasure having the couple at the village over the past year.
“They are just the nicest couple and it’s great to have them here,” she said.
