Residents of The Laurels Retirement Village are hoping to bag an award in the Mount Barker District Show garden competition with an audacious, 11th hour entry.

After becoming aware of the competition only 24 hours before judging began, residents rallied to make finishing touches to the already well-maintained gardens.
Resident Margie Fort, president of the Hutchinson Street village’s residents’ committee, led the way.
“The roses are just beautiful, and the layout of our gardens is lovely,” she said.
“We have a few grand old trees that provide a glorious canopy of flowers and plants around the village.”
Gardener Will Downard, who has just completed a Certificate III in Horticulture, works tirelessly to keep the gardens looking stunning for the everyone to enjoy.
The village has a cabinet full of awards won previously, and Village Manager Deb Maiolo said she was proud of the residents’ entry this time around.
“I just feel privileged to work in a village with such amazing surrounds and gardens,” she said.
All prizes will be presented at the Mount Barker Garden Presentation Dinner to be held on 2nd February in St Paul’s Lutheran Church Hall, Hahndorf.
