Residents play dress-up at The Laurels

The Laurels Retirement Village
For the young at heart at Mt Barker’s The Laurels Retirement Village, the temptation to go all out at the recent fancy dress evening was too much to resist.
With costumes ranging from Dame Edna to the Phantom of the Opera, many of the guests were unrecognisable.
Long-time resident Margie Fort, who came along dressed as the Queen of Hearts, says, “A dozen people who have known me for ten years didn’t even recognise me until I spoke!”
“It’s great fun to dress up.”
Margie’s elaborate costume was just one of the many fabulous outfits on display.
Many residents paid homage to characters from film and television, with Bonnie and Clyde, Eeyore and Tigger, and Princess Leia and Darth Vader all putting in an appearance.
“Everyone looked wonderful,” says Margie.
Guests sat down to a delicious two-course dinner and enjoyed performances from a group of talented local seniors known as the Good Time Entertainers, who had a fresh costume change for every number.
The evening was the latest in a string of fabulous social events held at The Laurels, which occur regularly as a way to get the community together for a bit of fun.
Village Manager Kathy Fox felt that the fancy dress night did just that.
She says, “The residents really embraced the evening and we had some fabulous costumes.”
“It was an excellent night!”
